Since 1993, the Swiss Foundation for Social Tourism has been responsible for the construction and maintenance of the buildings in which the Swiss Youth Hostels are located.
About the Swiss Foundation for Social Tourism
We have been developing projects and building, renovating and managing the properties of the Swiss Youth Hostels for over 50 years. These include historic castles as well as modern wellness hostels. We focus on high-quality architecture and provide affordable accommodation throughout Switzerland with a vibrant building culture. We also achieve this goal in collaboration with partner organisations.
Properties
Half of the around 50 youth hostels are owned by the Swiss Foundation for Social Tourism. The rented properties are operated in close cooperation with local authorities. The network is also complemented by strategic associated Youth Hostels.
Our history
We have been committed to social tourism in Switzerland for over 50 years. Our mission: to create attractive, modern youth hostels for young people, school classes and families – often together with strong partner institutions. The organisation and the architectural history evolved at the same time.

Clear principles guide the development of our youth hostels. This has always been a key factor to our success.
People and faces
The Swiss Foundation for Social Tourism is backed by dedicated individuals. Our team of architects ensures sustainable, functional buildings for the operation of the Swiss Youth Hostels. And the Board of Trustees is responsible for the strategic direction. Together, they are committed to ensuring that our buildings remain economical, environmentally conscious and socially accessible.
